Orange County Counseling
Introduction
Dr. Deborah Barrett offers uniquely specialized counseling services at ZCOC. She seeks to cultivate and strengthen the spiritual resources deep within each client, and to utilize these more effectively to meet life’s challenges. ZCOC counseling emphasizes the possibilities for healing, growth, and transformation. Some people refer to this as pastoral counseling, some call it “positive” psychotherapy, spiritual direction, holistic health, coaching or mentoring. For those who wish, she can present Zen approaches and methods as part of the counseling process.
Mindfulness
For those who wish, Dr. Barrett can provide an introduction to mindfulness practices and their application to daily life challenges through Orange County counseling.
Anger Management Program
A series of 4 classes in anger management is available in individual sessions. Email or call to schedule.
Addictions
Assessment and treatment for addictions such as alcohol, sex, money, etc. can be done at ZCOC, Orange County counseling.

Qualifications
Dr. Barrett is exceptionally well-trained in both spirituality and psychology. She is a certified pastoral counselor, and fellow of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors (#6011). Dr. Barrett has been a Zen minister for 18 years and was a Roman Catholic sister for 20 years. She has her Master’s Degree in theology from Loyola University in Chicago. Dr. Barrett’s Ph.D. is in clinical psychology, with specialization in pastoral care and counseling. She has been in private practice for 20 years, as well as counseling hundreds of people while serving as a hospice chaplain. She teaches classes at Cal State Fullerton in Comparative Religion, “Spirituality and Aging,” and “Death and Dying.” She teaches at the Zen Center of Orange County.
Scheduling
Orange County counseling sessions are for 50 minutes and can usually be arranged to meet client’s schedules. The fees are $75 per session; $150.00 per couple. Most insurance plans do not reimburse for pastoral counseling, but many clients prefer not to use HMO or insurance options because there is greater privacy, no paperwork, no limitation on the number or frequency of sessions, and greater emphasis on spirituality.
